Expedite Closure of Chilseong Market and reprimand local government lack of action

The Chilseong Market is the only market among three notorious largest dog meat markets in the country where live dog slaughter is carried out.
Tens of thousands of citizens every year strongly urge the closure of the Chilseong dog meat market in Daegu, but the markets are still there. The city of Daegu and Daegu Buk-gu (Northern) District Office, which must make a firm decision and cooperate closely with each other in order to completely shut down the dog meat market, have repeatedly shifted responsibility to each other.
In April, at a meeting to discuss this market, the city of Daegu and Daegu Buk-gu District Office announced a shut down plan limited to only some of the markets. Currently, there are a total of 5 bosintang (dog meat soup) restaurants at Chilseong Market-ro 5-gil, Buk-gu, and 10 health centers where dogs are caged and sold. Among them, only three dog meat soup restaurants and one health center have a plan to complete the closure by 2025, and there are no specific plans for the other businesses.
The Chilseong Market, which KARA visited again in the summer, the “season of death” for dogs, was quite different from February. Health center merchants were moving in and out of the store, trimming the carcasses of slaughtered dogs. Outside the health centers, the refrigerators were full of meat awaiting sale. There were more dogs waiting for slaughter along with chickens and rabbits. They were slaughtered as soon as they were sold.
For the total closure of the Chilseong dog meat market in Daegu, the Daegu Mayor’s decision and close cooperation with Daegu and Daegu Buk-gu District Office are needed. Rather than suggesting passive and lukewarm measures as a solution, they should conduct active inspections and intensive enforcement and establish a practical and specific plan for “full shutdown” rather than “partial closure”.
The season of death has surely returned to the dogs of Chilseong Market. With your attention, please join us once again to accelerate the closure of the Chilseong dog meat market!
