Daegu Chilseong Dog Meat Market.
July 11 is Chobok, the first of the three Boknal in Korea.
Every Boknal season, there are many animal activists protesting.
The mayor of Daegu had promised to close the Chilseong Dog Meat Market, but after two years, there has been little action.
You can see signs “Dog meat” and “Dog Soju”.
These are businesses that buy and sell dogs for human consumption.
In 2019, the city of Daegu had promised to close down the dog meat market.
Since then, only two dog slaughterhouses and two dog meat shops had closed down.
They claim that the difficulty comes from the fact that there are many of these dog meat shops located on the periphery and not inside the Chilseong market.
There are total of 15 dog meat businesses, and 11 of them are outside the boundary of Chilseong Market. This excluded them from the city government’s negotiation for compensation.
Even if they were to convert their businesses, there is no legal basis for compensating them.
The businesses state that they will close down if they are paid compensation.
Nine of the shops had signed an agreement to end the dog meat business if they receive compensation.
The Minjoo Political Party (democrat party) in Daegu decided to draft bylaws to compensate these businesses.
Daegu Council member, Mr. Kang Min-Koo, is speaking in support of the closure of the Chilseong Market, saying that they should collaborate with the Buk-gu District to establish a policy to close down the dog meat market as soon as possible.
He hopes this will be accomplished in 2021 so that the arguments and conflicts about the dog meat issue will come to an end.
Fifteen organizations composed of animal welfare groups and several regional political parties joined in solidarity to together pressure Daegu to close down Chilseong dog meat market.
Video: Daegu Council member, Mr. Kang Min-Koo, is speaking in support of the closure of the Chilseong Market. Councilman Kang makes convincing arguments why Chilseong dog meat market must close down and gives 3 main reasons: 1. To improve Daegu’s image. 2. For vitalization of local tourism 3. The dog meat businesses are willing to close their businesses if given compensation. We thank Councilman Kang for his efforts and doing the right thing!
